Fine Gael’s sole female TD from the south of the country says she honed her political skills from an early age canvassing doorsteps with her father Timmy who was a long time party activist. Áine Collins was elected to the Dáil in 2011 when she took the third and final seat in the Cork North West constituency in her first run for Leinster House. She is a qualified accountant and auditor and sits on the Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Committee and the Public Accounts Committee. She is married with three children.

Such is the confidence within Fianna Fáil that party stalwart Michael Moynihan will retain his seat in Cork North West, the former Ógra chairman has been joined on the constituency ticket by councillor Aindrias Moynihan who is running for the first time. Michael Moynihan, from Kiskeam near Mallow, was first elected TD in 1997 and has held the seat ever since. He is from a farming family and is a member of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA) and heavily involved with Kiskeam GAA club. He is married and has two children.
Michael Creed was first elected to Dáil Éireann over 25 years ago and followed on from his father, and long-time Fine Gael party devotee Donal, who served as a TD until 1989. The Macroom native began his life as a public representative in 1987 when he was co-opted onto Cork county council. He was the big winner two years later when he took a surprise seat in the general election and, with the exception of the 2002 run off, he has kept it ever since. He is married to Sinead and has three children and is on the Oireachtas Finance Committee and has held various portfolios on Fine Gael’s frontbench throughout his political career.
Nigel Dennehy is one of Sinn Fein's youngest candidates running during the general election, aged 27 when nominated April last year. Dennehy wants to focus his campaign on rural Ireland and investment in services.
Cormac Manning has just finished studying Law and Irish in UCC and is standing for the Green Party. The 22-year-old has no family background in politics.
Aindrias Moynihan was educated locally in Coolea and ballyvourney. The Fianna Fail councillor has degrees in Engineering and Marketing and management.
Jason Fitzgerald is a Founder and Former Chairman of IFDL (Irish Farmers with Designated land) and previously worked in the Construction industry for 12 years. The Renua candidate and dairy farmer will be running on a number of issues including agriculture, capital investment and community services.
Steven O'Riordan, who is a film director, focuses on social and human rights issues. The independent candidate previously ran a successful campaign to get the Cork County Council to make all public buildings and footpaths wheelchair accessible.
John Paul O'Shea is Mayor of County Cork after becoming an Independent member of Cork County Council representing the Mallow Electoral Area in June 2009 following success in the local elections. He aims to fight the closure of local post offices and rural services and establishing community groupings.
The father of Diarmuid O'Flynn, Donal ‘Dan’ O’Flynn was part of the Cork hurling team during the 1940s. O'Flynn has campaigned on a number of left wing issues.
Shirley Griffin will stand for election after and unsuccesful local campaign last year.
A native of Macroom, Independent candidate Jerry O'Sullivan (52) has unsuccessfully contested the last three local elections in Cork. Among his priorities for office are to get more funding for roads and flood defence in Cork, the abolishment of USC, and greater access to healthcare and primary/secondary education. As an Independent, he says he will work to ensure that Cork gets its “fair share” of any national investment plans.
As a candidate for the Communist Party of Ireland, Michael O'Donnell believes more than a change of Government is needed. In his own words, the Government “must be Socialist [and] run by working people for the benefit of all.” A retired secondary school teacher and trade unionist, this will be Mr O'Donnell's first time running in a general election. He previously ran unsuccessfully in the 2014 local elections.
