Terence Flanagan has been a sitting TD since 2007 and previously sat on Dublin City Council. He was a member of Fine Gael when elected in the Dublin North-East constituency in both 2007 and 2011. However, he was expelled from the Fine Gael Parliamentary party in 2013 for defying the party whip and voting against the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill. Mr Flanagan was involved with the Reform Alliance for a time before joining Renua Ireland in 2015. His areas of interest include housing, health and crime.

On the Ballot
Richard Bruton is the current Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and will be contesting the election in the newly formed Dublin Bay North constituency. He won his seat in Dublin North-East for the first time in 1982 and has subsequently retained it at every asking since. Mr Bruton has also served as a Senator for a time in the 80’s. He was Deputy leader of Fine Gael between 2002-10 before being replaced by James Reilly after famously challenging Enda Kenny for leadership in 2010. Mr Bruton and his wife Susan Meehan have four children. He enjoys running, swimming, cycling, cooking and music.
Independent TD Finian McGrath (62) won his seat in 2002 having unsuccessfully run in both 1992 and 1997. He was a Dublin City Councillor between 1999 and 2003. He is a widower and has two children. His areas of interest are health, education and disability. He previously volunteered with the Simon Community and was a founder member of the INTO credit union.
Tommy Broughan (68) won his seat in the 2011 General Election and has held it since the 1992 General Election. He had previously ruin unsuccessfully in 1989. Mr Broughan was expelled from the Labour Parliamentary Party in 2011. Since his expulsion he has worked as an Independent TD for his constituents in Dublin North-East and now Dublin Bay North. He will be running as an Independent candidate in the upcoming election.
A member of Dublin City council since 2004, Naoise O’Muiri ran unsuccessfully in the Dublin North Central constituency in the 2011 general election. Lord Mayor from 2012-2013, he is the governor and a member of the Executive Committee of the National Maternity Hospital. An avid sports fan and father-of-three, Cllr O’Muiri is a qualified engineer and has campaigned for increased cycle lanes for in and around Dublin to encourage tourism and safety for cyclists.
One of three Fine Gael candidates for Dublin Bay North constituency, Stephanie Regan (54) narrowly lost out on a seat in the 2014 local elections. A psychotherapist, she believes that more investment is needed in Ireland’s mental health services. She is also concerned about illegal dumping in the Dublin Bay, and is campaigning for more support for the self-employed. Ms Regan is the sister of former Fine Gael Senator Eugene Regan.
People Before Profit Alliance candidate John Lyons (36) was elected to Dublin City Council in 2014. The prominent anti-water charges campaigner ran unsuccessfully for the party in the 2011 general election, receiving 3.6 pc of first preference votes. Clllr Lyons has been involved in campaigns against the cuts to home help, Dublin Bus routes, water charges and property taxes. He believes in a progressive taxation system to fund local services, housing, health and education.
The Green Party's Donna Cooney has served as a councillor between 1996 and 1999 and has run unsuccessfully for a Dáil seat in Dublin North East and Dublin North Central. An artist and part-time teacher, Ms Cooney is also the founder of a video game company that focuses on ‘green-themed’ games. Over the last 20 years, she has campaigned for clean air, planning permission reform, and the protection of local amenities.
Cian O’Callaghan (36) was elected first to Fingal County Council in 2009 as a member of the Labour Party before retaining his seat as an Independent in 2014. He topped the poll in the last local election for the area. Now a member of the Social Democrats, Cllr O’Callaghan is campaigning for the end of the ‘two tier’ health service. A former Mayor of Fingal, his areas of interest include housing, planning, and childcare.
Deirdre Heney was first elected as a Dublin City councillor in 1999 and has been re-elected three times. A long-term Fianna Fáil member, she ran unsuccessfully for the Dáil in 2002. Ms Heney worked for Aer Lingus and Aer Rianta before accepting a position as a Parliamentary Assistant in Leinster House. The prominent Dublin City councillor has been vocal in her criticism of Fianna Fáil after a former junior minister she defeated at convention was added to the constituency’s election ticket following her successful nomination.
A long-time activist for Sinn Fein, this will be Denise Mitchell’s (45) first time running in a general election. A Dublin City councillor since 2014, the former shop steward from Coolock ran unsuccessfully in the 2009 local elections. A member of the DCC’s Environment Strategic Policy Committee, Cllr Mitchell is calling for more investment in Beaumont Hospital – saying that it had been neglected by successive governments. She also seeks to have water taxes abolished and protections put in place to protect family homes from repossessions.
Trade union activist Michael O’Brien (40) was elected to Dublin City Council in 2014. A member of the Socialist Party since 1992, he is active in local movements opposing household and property taxes. He has also campaigned against water charges and believes that rent controls and mortgage write downs should be introduced. Cllr O’Brien is a current member of DCC’s North Central Area Joint Policing Committee.
Senator Averil Power (36) was elected to the Upper House of the Oireachtas for Fianna Fáil in 2011 after two failed election bids. Now an Independent, she was the party’s Seanad Spokesperson on Education and Skills. Senator Power is an advocated on a number of issues including education, social justice, mental health, housing and LGBT equality. Alongsiden these issues, she is campaigning for all Irish adoptees to have a right to their birth certs.
Independent candidate Jimmy Guerin won a seat on Fingal County Council in 2014 following an unsuccessful general election bid in 2011. The brother of murdered journalist Veronica Guerin, he is calling for an increase in Gardaí numbers to combat rural crime and drug-related offences. The Independent councillor also lists housing, homelessness, and suicide prevention as among issues he hopes to tackle if elected.
Pro-Life candidate Paul Clarke unsuccessfully contested the 2014 local elections having failed to gain a Dáil seat in the 2011 general election. The business development manager is campaigning on a platform of ending austerity and public ownership of the banking system.
A native Northside Dubliner, Aodhán Ó Riordain was first elected a TD in February 2011 having previously served as a member of Dublin City Council for seven years. During this term he was appointed as the Minister of State with responsibility for New Communities, Culture and Equality as well as being appointed as the Minister of State for the National Drugs Strategy. Before winning his seat in 2011 he was a teacher and principal of St Laurence O’Toole’s GNS in Sheriff Street in the city centre. He served as Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin in 2006.
Seán Haughey (53) is the son of former Taoiseach Charles Haughey and was a TD for Dublin North Central until 2011. First elected to the Dáil in 1992, he has served as a Minister of State on a number of occasions. Following the lost of his seat, Mr Haughey was elected as a Dublin City councillor in 2014. He lists tackling the lack of social housing and provisions for the homelessness as his priorities for government.
Sinn Féin’s Mícheál MacDonncha (51) has been a Dublin City councillor since 2011. A Parliamentary Assistant to deputy Caoimhghin O’Caolain and former editor of An Phoblacht, a newspaper published by Sinn Féin, Mr MacDonncha is campaigning on issues including the lack of housing in Dublin and abolishing water charges. He is a member of the Moore Street Advisory Committee in Dublin City Council.
A prominent community activist, this will be Damien O’Neill's first time running for election. An active member of the Right2Change group and an anti-austerity campaigner, he was one of five anti-water charges jailed in February 2015 for breaching an order not to interfere water meter installers.
Raheny native Proinsias O'Conarain is standing as an Independent this general election following an unsuccessfully bid as an Anti-Austerity Alliance candidate in the 2014 local elections. Active in the campaigns against household and water charges, Mr Ó Conaráin is self-employed and works in the area of property maintenance.
