On the Ballot

Umar Al-Qadri

Umar Al-Qadri

Independent

Dr Umar Al-Qadri is a founder of the Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland and is Chair of the Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council. He most recently stood unsuccessfully in the European elections in June for the Dublin constituency, but polled creditably and lasted for several counts before elimination. Born in Pakistan, he spent his childhood in the Netherlands and regards himself as Dutch. He returned to Pakistan after his schooling for intensive Islamic studies. Twenty years ago he returned to Ireland when aged in his twenties and took up work as an Iman

Jack Chambers

Jack Chambers

Fianna Fáil

Jack Chambers is the deputy leader of Fianna Fail, appointed this year by Micheál Martin, and is the Minister for Finance -- able to deliver plenty of giveaways in his very first Budget, the package a major plank of the Government parties' appeal to the electorate. Mr Chambers is aged only 34, but has had a meteoric rise since succeeding to the old Brian Lenihan seat in the constituency. He comes from an established FF base in Castleknock and was education at Belvedere College. Earlier this year he announced he was gay. He was first elected to the Dáil in 2016.

Ruth Coppinger

Ruth Coppinger

People Before Profit-Solidarity

Ruth Coppinger is a housing campaigner, Socialist Party activist and former TD for Dublin West. She is running in the election under People Before Profit-Solidarity. The 57-year-old, a former teacher, first entered the Dáil under the banner of the Anti-Austerity Alliance, and then held her seat next time out until losing it in 2020. Ms Coppinger is a former campaigner against water charges.

Emer Currie

Emer Currie

Fine Gael

Emer Currie is a daughter of Austin Currie, a founder member of the SDLP in the North and a former TD after he moved south with his family. He was once Fine Gael.s nominee to be President, but lost out to Mary Robinson. Elected on her first time of standing in the local elections in 2019, the former marketing executive. who attended Queen's University Belfast, was unsuccessful when "sweeping" for Mr Varadkar at the 2020 Dáil election. She was subsequently nominated to the Seanad as one of the Taoiseach's 11 nominees

Susanne Delaney

Susanne Delaney

Independent

Claims the area where she lives is 85pc non-national, that her daughter is the only Irish child in her class and cannot understand the languages around her. She is standing as an Independent, but has been endorsed by far righters like Malachy Steenson. She says she is "not okay" with the landscape of the country changing. Susanne, also known as Suzie, has an axis with Stephen Kerr, who is running in Mayo, describing themselves as The Irish Inquiry media platform, according to a crowdfunding page.

Paul Donnelly

Paul Donnelly

Sinn Féin

Paul Donnelly is a sitting Sinn Féin TD who is a former manager with Túsla, the child and family agency, and has just turned 45. A volunteer with the St Peregine's GAA club, he has been actibve in fighting truancy and has been on the drugs taskforce in Blanchardstown.

Tania Doyle

Tania Doyle

Independent

Ms Doyle is an Independent who was first elected as a councillor in 2019 and held her seat in the local elections this year. She describes herself as "middle of the road" and takes a non-ideological approach on local and community issues. Ms Doyle came to national attention when she and her husband were physically attacked by two men while putting up posters for the council poll in June. Her husband had his glasses smashed by a man who was ranting about immigration. She praised the Gardaí for coming to their assistance after 15-minute unprovoked attack. She briefly considered ending her career in public life.

John Forde

John Forde

Independent

A late late addition to the ballot in Dublin West. Retired manager, Mr Forde resides on the Navan Road, in a location that is just outside the constituency boundary, with Dublin Central lying to the east. Posters bearing the name of Forde as a non-party candidate have appeared in various Dublin 15 suburbs, bearing the slogan “No more immigrants”.

Breda Hanaphy

Breda Hanaphy

Sinn Féin

Running mate to Paul Donnelly and a new name at national level after establishing herself by first winning a council seat in 2019 and then holding it in June. She lives in Corduff with her husband Paddy and four children. A long-serving member of Sinn Féin, she has been involved in various community groups and charities.

Ellen Murphy

Ellen Murphy

Social Democrats

Ms Murphy grew up in Dublin 15 and has remained in Dublin West as an adult. Her career has been as a Trade Union organiser. She was also a national campaign manager for 'Together for Yes' on the repeal of the Eighth Amendment prohibiting abortion, a landmark success in 2018. Now she is concerned locally about the pressure on school places, lack of access to exceptional education support, and under-investment in transport. She says she knows firsthand the importance of early intervention on special education needs and the need to expand support systems.

Lorna Nolan

Lorna Nolan

Fianna Fáil

A running mate to Jack Chambers, Ms Nolan could be in the final mix, but few have any expectations of her making her debut in the 34th Dáil. Having said that, transfer patterns can do strange things, as Lorna saw in 2014 when she was elected to the council for the first time on just a 3pc share of the vote, or barely over one-quarter of a quota. She doubled her first vote share to 6pc at the 2019 election, but improved only slightly to 7pc in June.

Roderic O'Gorman

Roderic O'Gorman

The Green Party

Mr O'Gorman needs no introduction, although he did spend many years trying to do just that -- first standing for the Dáil seventeen years ago, before being elected last time out. He immediately became a Cabinet minister when the Government was formed, and has recently become leader of the Green Party. Mr O'Gorman was recently attacked on an election canvass, and a man pleaded guilty to assault when brought before the courts.

Patrick Quinlan

Patrick Quinlan

The National Party

Councillor Quinlan belongs to the far right National Party. He is a father of three girls and says he was drawn to political action during the abortion referendum. He then became active locally on the blocking of a new housing development at Ladyswell Square, Mulhuddart. "I eventually joined the National Party alongside some friends, and we became politically active advocating to put the Irish people first."

Natalie Treacy

Natalie Treacy

Independent

Last month Ms Treacy, who was a Sinn Féin councillor for the Castleknock electoral area from 2014 to 2024, announced that she would contest Dublin West as an Independent. She had been a sitting councillor in Castleknock, but was persuaded by party leader Mary Lou to run in Cabra in the local elections in June, part of a failed four-candidate strategy “It was a mistake. We lost a seat, my seat, and did not gain any." she said Ms Treacy said she resigned from Sinn Féin because of “internal party structures locally,” but did not go into detail.

Ellen Troy

Ellen Troy

Aontú

Ellen Troy impressively took a seat in Castleknock at the first time of asking in June. She grew up in Scotland, born to Irish parents, but is the only one of her siblings to have moved home. The mother of four has lived in Castleknock for decades, and has been extremely active locally, having served on parent teacher associations and other organisations. A chorister, she is pro-life -- a hallmark of membership of Aontú, which was set up after Peadar Tóibín, its sole TD, split from Sinn Féin over abortion

John Walsh

John Walsh

Labour

Mr Walsh is a regular election contestant whose chance may just have come at last, given the increase in the seats in the constituency and nascent evidence that the Labour Party has been forgiven by the electorate for its role in propping up Fine Gael during the austerity years, via the election to the European Parliament of Aodhán Ó Riordáin in the Dublin constituency. Mr Walsh is a lecturer and researcher in Education at Trinity College, working with both primary and secondary teachers. He is the author of a biography of former President (and ex-FF minister) Patrick Hillery. Cllr Walsh holds a doctorate in education policy.
