Willie Aird

Willie Aird

Fine Gael

Chosen as the Fine Gael party nomination in September, Aird is no stranger to politics, having served as a county councillor and town councillor for Portlaoise since 1979. In what was viewed as a surprise move by many Cllr Conor Bergin withdrew his candidacy after running a strong campaign and topping the poll in June in Borris-in-Ossary/Mountmellick. This move came after another councillor, Paddy Buggy withdrew from the race with Aird. Back in 2020, Aird turned down an all-expenses-paid trip to New York for St Patrick's Day because he was too busy calving cows. He also turned down the offer 15 years ago as he was busy with work commitments then as well. "It's because of my work commitments, I can't get anybody to fill in for me, I have a lot of cows calving at that time, I couldn't walk away," explained Cllr Aird at the time. Speaking at his nomination for Fine Gael in September, he said better infrastructure, including improved roads and transport, to meet the needs of our growing population and housing are some of his key priorities. "I am committed to ensuring access to private, social, and affordable housing, along with the necessary health and education services that go with it. “Supporting working families, enhancing disability services, and improving youth and recreation facilities will also be at the forefront of my work. “I will continue to advocate tirelessly on behalf of farm families, ensuring the future of agriculture in Laois. I will be eager to lead that charge in the Dáil."

Seán Fleming

Seán Fleming

Fianna Fáil

Fleming was the only candidate nominated by Fianna Fail in July to contest the general election. Originally from the Swan, near the Laois-Kilkenny border, Fleming is Minister of State in the Department of Foreign Affairs, a role he was appointed to in July 2020. He was elected to represent the Laois/Offaly Constituency in the 2020 General Election, having been first elected to the Dáil in 1997. A chartered accountant, he was educated at University College Dublin and is a former Chairperson of the Dáil Public Accounts Committee. He was also previously Chairperson of the Oireachtas Finance Committee. Sean was Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Public Expenditure & Reform from 2011 to 2016. Seán was also elected as a Member of Laois County Council in 1999 and served in that role for 4 years. Fleming came in for criticism in 2022 when he suggested people should stop complaining about their finances, during a 20-year high in inflation, comments he later apologised for.

Independent

Elaine Mullally, a local business owner from Portarlington, has declared as an independent candidate. Mullally, a former Independent Ireland candidate, said recently she was running as an independent as she is "still disillusioned. I can’t understand how the main parties seem to think they are separate from the people in their towns and villages.” Her eight priorities for the election campaign are: housing, cost of living, immigration, mental health, small business, farmers, education and crime. A number of other independent candidates are expected to run, while Aontu is understood to be looking a running a candidate.

Brian Stanely topped the poll in Laois-Offaly for Sinn Fein in 2020. His political career started with his election in 1999's local elections to Portlaoise Town Council. His next step up the political ranks came in 2002 when he ran in the general election, but it was 2011 before he secured a seat in national politics for Sinn Fein, a seat he held on to two years later. His wife, Caroline Dwane Stanley, has held the council seat he vacated, but is not expected to stand in the general election for Sinn Fein.  In July 2020, Stanley was appointed as the chair of the Public Accounts Committee. However, it's the controversy in recent weeks that have put Stanley in the limelight, when he announced his resignation from Sinn Fein.
