This will be his third attempt at securing a seat as a TD. He ran in 2011 and 2016 previously. He only narrowly missed out in the latter by a margin of 170 votes. He topped the polls however in the most recent local election, surpassing the quota by a significant margin.

Pippa Hackett

The Green Party

Senator Pippa Hackett, who is originally from Co.Mayo, joined the Green Party on the recommendation of its founder, Christopher Fettes, who is a neighbour of Hacketts. She obtained a seat on the county council in the 2019 local elections, and later that year was elected as a Senator to the agricultural panel in a by-election. She ran unsuccessfully in the 2020 general election, sitting fifth in the-then five-seater Laois-Offaly constituency. Earlier this year, she put herself forward as a candidate for the Green party leader election amidst Eamon Ryan’s stepping down. Her husband, Mark Hackett was co-opted to the county council this year, and their son Charlie unsuccessfully ran in the 2024 local elections.

Aoife Masterson

Her manifesto highlights housing, health and rural communities as focal points of her campaign. With audacious plans for the introduction of 300,000 homes in five years and an investment of one billion in areas such as infrastructure and community facilities across the county. Housing is high on the list of issues Masterson wants to address, an issue forefront in the mind of all candidates, but housing for younger people as an issue will be sure to come up when canvassing, with Masterson being one of the younger candidates.

Tony McCormack

Tony McCormack

Fianna Fáil

Tony McCormack was re-elected to the council in the 2024 in count four, and sees himself selected as Fianna Fail’s first candidate for the Offaly constituency in the general election. McCormack is in the coveted position of having the new boundary line, which was drawn up by the boundary commission and to be included in this year’s election for the first time, set to potentially benefit him significantly. The councillor, who is from Tullamore, will potentially stand to gain a voter base with a portion of land that would have been included in Kildare-South now to be in his constituency. It is said this area might include as many as five thousand voters.

Fergus McDonnell
